Root cause analysis guru Bob Latino recently shared positive insights on JD Solomon's newest book, Facilitating with FINESSE.

The 2023 SessionLab survey on facilitation is based on over 1100 responses from facilitators worldwide. Responses came from 93 countries, with 41% of responses coming from the European continent (of which 29% from the EU) and 28.5% from North America.

Hybrid Format Dominates

67.4% of facilitators ran at least part of their sessions in a hybrid format in 2022, meaning some participants shared the same physical space and others joined remotely. Most sessions ran online, but almost as many respondents worked "in the room" as well. How will these trends evolve in time?

Loners

97% of respondents stated they sometimes or most of the time work alone. Of the respondents, 38% are either independent freelancers or the only facilitation professional in their company. Interestingly, experienced facilitators are more likely to collaborate with a colleague than their less experienced peers.

Facilitation Professions

Regarding professional education, almost 50% of respondents stated they have no certification related to facilitation at all. However. 90% of respondents have completed their higher education degrees.

Roles

Respondents selected, on average, four roles they identify with in their jobs; over half of the respondents reported one of their roles as some form of learning & development trainer, coach, or consultant. Only 2% identified as engineers (or some other technology field). That leaves a lot of room to grow for technically trained professionals!
